The first \u00a31,000 is tax-free and is known as the Property Income Allowance. Anything you earn beyond this is taxable at the usual Income Tax rates. To calculate the income you\u2019re taxed on, you should add your rental income to your wages (if you\u2019re employed) and any other income you have. The total amount is your taxable income.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Property Income Allowance is only worth claiming if you\u2019ve spent less than \u00a31,000 during the tax year on your property business. This spending is known as your expenses. To lower your taxable income, you\u2019re allowed to deduct your<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0expenses from your rental income so you only pay tax on your profits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if I\u2019m a live-in-landlord?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you only rent out a room in your property, the rules are a bit different.
