Working through an umbrella company<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/umbrella-company\/\">umbrella company<\/a> is a business that acts as an employer to freelancers. Instead of you getting paid directly, your umbrella company pays your salary via PAYE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How would it work, you ask?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You do some work for your client<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your client pays the umbrella company your fees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your umbrella company pays you your employment income<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They also pay your taxes for you to HMRC via PAYE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Check with your umbrella company on how the process works. They should be paying taxes from your salary to HMRC on your behalf, like any other employer would.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">C. Not being sure if you&#8217;re an employee or subcontractor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, it\u2019s not easy to know whether you\u2019re an employee or a subcontractor. However, it usually is stated in the contract when you start working.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re still unsure, you can figure out if you\u2019re an <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/employee\/\">employee<\/a> by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Asking your employer for your <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/payslip\/\">payslip<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tax.service.gov.uk\/check-employment-status-for-tax\/disclaimer\">Checking your status online with HMRC<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, if you\u2019re not an employee that means you\u2019ll have untaxed income you\u2019ll need to declare to HMRC, through a Self Assessment tax return.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">D. Doing business through your own limited company<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case you\u2019re actually both an owner (shareholder) and employee of your own company (director). Therefore, you wouldn&#8217;t be considered self-employed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Submit a company tax return each year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay tax on company profits first (minus costs, including salaries)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay yourself a salary (and pay taxes through PAYE) or an annual dividend (and <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/investor-capital-gains-tax-returns\/how-to-pay-dividend-tax\/\">pay dividend tax<\/a>), or both<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit a personal tax return as well <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/calculator\/dividend-tax\/\">if your dividends are over \u00a310,000<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Need a hand?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Still not sure what your situation is?
