{"id":130,"date":"2019-05-28T14:12:47","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T13:12:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/?p=130"},"modified":"2025-10-06T15:51:54","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T14:51:54","slug":"paying-self-assessment-tax-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/self-assessment-basics\/paying-self-assessment-tax-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"How to pay your tax bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you need to pay your tax bill, HMRC accepts most payment methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tax.service.gov.uk\/pay\/self-assessment\/choose-a-way-to-pay\">online by card<\/a>: but you can only use a debit card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>through a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pay-self-assessment-tax-bill\/direct-debit\">direct debit<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pay-self-assessment-tax-bill\/bank-details?utm_source=sa-overview&amp;utm_medium=internal-link&amp;utm_campaign=chaps\">CHAPS, BACs, or through a direct bank transfer<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pay-self-assessment-tax-bill\/by-post\">by cheque at post<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pay-self-assessment-tax-bill\/bank-or-building-society\">at your bank or building society<\/a>: remember to bring a paying-in slip from HMRC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What you need to remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>have your UTR number ready &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/how-to-get-utr\">here is how to get it<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>payments can take between&nbsp;1 to 5 working days&nbsp;to reach HMRC, so if the payment deadline falls on a bank holiday or a weekend,&nbsp;make sure that your payment reaches HMRC before that &#8211; or you&#8217;ll be fined (\u00a3100).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if I cannot pay my tax bill on time?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/contact-hmrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contact HMRC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What will happen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HMRC will consider why you&#8217;re struggling to pay the amount owed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HMRC will let you know how much they believe you can pay right now<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will also be able to work out a payment plan for paying the rest of your tax bill.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Our advice: even if you cannot afford to pay your tax bill,&nbsp;do not wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Submit your tax return and discuss with HMRC &#8212; it&#8217;s much harder to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/self-assessment-basics\/appealing-an-hmrc-self-assessment-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appeal a Self Assessment penalty<\/a>&nbsp;than discuss a payment plan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you need to pay your tax bill, HMRC accepts most payment methods: What you need to remember: What if I cannot pay my tax bill on time?
