Just when we thought life couldn\u2019t get any more expensive, it does.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the council tax rebate?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The treasury has announced a \u00a3150 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/council-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">council tax<\/a> rebate as part of a support package to help families with their expenses as energy bills skyrocket. To combat the increasing cost of living, the government is expected to give a one-off \u00a3150 council tax rebate to low income households across the UK. This is calculated to be roughly 15 million households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why do we care?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We care because we believe in tax education and teaching you, our community, as much as we can about the taxes that may affect you. As you can probably guess, we\u2019re all about understanding the ins and outs, and spreading the information far and wide. There are so many different taxes in the UK and corresponding rules and regulations that it&#8217;s important that we stay in the know about it all, so you don\u2019t have to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So what even is council tax?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, you, the community, raise funds to pay the council that\u2019s used to take care of local services like policing, street cleaning, road repairs, fire services, and more. The amount of council tax you pay depends on where you live and the price of your property. There are some situations where you may be exempt from paying. You can find out more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/council-tax\/who-has-to-pay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What happens if you don\u2019t pay your council tax on time?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t pay your council tax on time, the council will contact you two weeks after the payment date to remind you to pay within seven days. If you pay it within that week, you\u2019re done and your council tax is paid &#8211; time to celebrate!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;However, if you don\u2019t pay within those seven days or this is your third late payment notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The council can send bailiffs around<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may have to go to court<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may have to pay the remaining council tax balance for the year in one go<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The council can claim the unpaid amount from:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Income support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employment and Support Allowance\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pension Credit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Universal Credit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Struggling to pay?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you\u2019re struggling to pay your council tax or think you might miss a payment (or already have), don&#8217;t worry. Just try to contact your local council as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\">Find my local council<\/a><\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Back to the council tax rebate\u2026 why is the government giving me free money?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, it\u2019s not free money (although we wish it was). Inflation rates are soaring and as the cost of living rises, the people who are on lower income salaries are negatively impacted the most. The situation is expected to continue in the same direction as the energy cap price increases in April by about 54%. However, one upside is that the \u00a3150 council tax rebate does not have to be paid back. According to the Treasury, this should cover about 80% of the homes in the UK. You will need to check your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/council-tax-bands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">council tax band <\/a>is either A, B, C, or D to qualify.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do council tax bands work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your council tax band is assigned based on what the value of your property was on the 1st of April 1991, for properties in England. In Wales, it\u2019s based on the price of your property in 2003; in Scotland it\u2019s 1991, but the tax bands work a little differently. You can find this information on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saa.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scottish Assessors<\/a> website. Northern Ireland uses \u201cdomestic rates\u201d instead of council tax, which you can read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.which.co.uk\/money\/tax\/council-tax\/council-tax-calculator-ag9ch3j076bw#:~:text=Council%20tax%20bands%20are%20calculated,different%20amount%20of%20council%20tax.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do I get the tax rebate?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re already paying your council tax via Direct Debit, the \u00a3150 will be directly credited to your bank account by your council in April. If you don\u2019t pay by Direct Debit, then your council will process a claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-yellow m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <h2>I\u2019m not eligible but I need help<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re not qualified for the \u00a3150 council tax rebate, there are other ways the council may be able to help you lessen the effects of the rising costs.
