They are considered employed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A carer is a person who has undertaken the care of a family member or friend. Most of the time, you don\u2019t get paid. However, you can claim a Carer\u2019s Allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Carer\u2019s Allowance?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/carers-allowance\/\">Carer\u2019s Allowance<\/a> is an allowance you can claim if you\u2019re caring for another person.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <h4>The criteria is as follows:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>You care for them for 35 hours or more a week<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re over the age of 16<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re not in full-time education<\/li>\n<li>You don\u2019t earn more than \u00a3139 a week from employment or self-employment (after deductions such as Income Tax, National Insurance, and expenses)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>The person you care for also has to qualify before you\u2019re able to receive Carer\u2019s Allowance. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-nude m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <h4>They must receive at least one of the following qualifying benefits:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Disability Living Allowance (DLA) at the middle or higher rate<\/li>\n<li>Attendance Allowance at any rate<\/li>\n<li>The daily part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)<\/li>\n<li>Armed Forces Independence Payment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you and the person you care for meet the criteria, then you\u2019ll be eligible to claim Carer\u2019s Allowance for the care you\u2019re providing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2024\/2025 rate is \u00a381.90 per week.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t claim more than once, even if you care for more than one person. The upside is that you don\u2019t need to be related to the person you care for nor do you have to live with them. As long as you satisfy the above criteria, you can claim even if you\u2019re caring for your partner, a relative, a friend, or even a neighbour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/carers-allowance\/how-to-claim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here<\/a> to claim Carer\u2019s Allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do carers pay tax?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you only claim Carer\u2019s Allowance, and have no other income or side hustles, then you don\u2019t need to pay tax on this claim. Don\u2019t you love not owing anything in tax?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Carer\u2019s Allowance <em>is<\/em> taxable. So, if you claim it, and also earn income from another job or personal pension, for example, and go over the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/personal-allowance\/\">Personal Allowance<\/a>, \u00a312,570, then you owe taxes. If you\u2019re an employee, your employer takes your taxes straight from your salary through <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/paye\/\">PAYE<\/a>. Thankfully, this means that you don\u2019t need to do anything &#8211; phew! You\u2019ll also have to file a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/self-assessment\/\">Self Assessment<\/a> tax return if you have other incomes like a side hustle or a self-employed part-time job. As long as your company doesn\u2019t reimburse you, then you can claim with HMRC. class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carer\u2019s council tax discount<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few benefits you\u2019re afforded to ease day-to-day stresses. If you\u2019re a carer, you might be able to get a discount on the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/council-tax\/\">council tax<\/a> you pay. However, for this particular discount, you must satisfy the following requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You live in the same house as the person you care for<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You provide at least 35 hours of a care per week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not the spouse or partner of the person you care for&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not the parent of the child you care for if they are under 18 years old<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person you care for claims one of the qualifying benefits (that we mentioned earlier)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve checked every requirement off the list, then hooray, you qualify! This means you can claim this benefit. You don\u2019t have to claim Carer\u2019s Allowance to claim this discount.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I claim home carer tax credit?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, what is tax credit? Tax credit, also known as carer\u2019s credit, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/national-insurance\/\">National Insurance<\/a> credit that helps with gaps in your NI record. Your <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/state-pension\/\">State Pension<\/a>, which is a regular payment from the government that you\u2019ll receive once you\u2019re of pension age, is based on your NI record.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main requirement is that you must be caring for somebody for at least 20 hours per week. However, you also have to be between 16 years old and the State Pension age to qualify.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The person you care for also has to receive one of the qualifying benefits we mentioned earlier &#8211; lots of criteria, we know.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a breakdown of how to get National Insurance Credits if you\u2019re a carer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>You\u2019re\u2026<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>How do I get credits?<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>On Carer\u2019s Allowance&nbsp;<\/td><td>You get Class 1 credits automatically<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>On Income Support and providing regular and substantial care<\/td><td>You get Class 3 credits automatically<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Caring for one or more sick or disabled person for at least 20 hours a week<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/carers-credit\/how-to-claim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apply for Class 3 carer\u2019s credits<\/a> if you\u2019re not on Carer\u2019s Allowance or Income Support<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does claiming Carer\u2019s Allowance affect other benefits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Claiming Carer\u2019s Allowance can affect other benefits you claim. Usually, the amount you get stays the same (or even goes up in some cases), however other benefits you claim may be reduced to balance your payments.
