And according to HMRC, many families with young children could already be missing out?!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, what are we talking about here? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s HMRC&#8217;s Tax-Free Childcare scheme which helps parents to cover certain childcare costs over the summer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So, what\u2019s Tax-free Childcare?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have children under 11 and you\u2019re not using Tax-Free Childcare, listen up.\ud83d\udc42Eligible families can receive up to \u00a32,000 a year per child to help with general costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These costs include, holiday clubs, before and after school clubs, childminder, nurseries, and other approved childcare schemes &#8211; woohoo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does it work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s pretty simple. For every \u00a38 you pay into your online childcare account, the government will pay \u00a32 to pay your provider. This works out to \u00a3500 every 3 months &#8211; \u00a32,000 for the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your child is disabled, you get \u00a31,000 every 3 months, or \u00a34,000 over the course of the year. You can use the extra money to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Help cover any extra hours of care your child requires<\/li><li>Pay your childcare provider for specialist equipment<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do I know if I\u2019m eligible?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve outlined the few factors HMRC use to check if you\u2019re eligible below.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-columns-mini m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-columns-mini__container\">\n\n        \n        \n        <div class=\"b-columns-mini__item m-blue\">\n                                    \n            <div class=\"b-columns-mini__item-content\">\n                <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n                    <h2>If you\u2019re working \ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udcbb<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>You can claim if your work status is one of the following:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In work<\/li>\n<li>On sick leave or annual leave<\/li>\n<li>On shared paternal, maternity, paternity or adoption leave<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n\n        \n        \n        <div class=\"b-columns-mini__item m-blue\">\n                                    \n            <div class=\"b-columns-mini__item-content\">\n                <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n                    <h2>If you\u2019re not working \u274c\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udcbb<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>You can still claim if your partner is working and you receive one of the following:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Incapacity Benefit<\/li>\n<li>Severe Disablement Allowance<\/li>\n<li>Carer\u2019s Allowance<\/li>\n<li>Contribution based Employment and Support Allowance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n\n        \n        \n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-columns-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>You can also apply if you\u2019re restarting work within the next 31 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your income&nbsp;<\/strong>\ud83d\udcb8<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re employed, you need to earn the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/national-minimum-wage-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Minimum (or Living) Wage<\/a>. Plus, you need to be working for at least 16 hours a week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HMRC will look to see that you\u2019re earning this from the day you apply and also over the following 3 months. Your partner will need to earn at least this amount as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re self-employed, use an average of how much you expect to earn over the current <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/self-assessment-basics\/uk-tax-year-dates-and-filing-deadlines\/\">tax year<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be aware \ud83d\udc40, if you and your partner earn over <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/high-earner-tax-returns\/what-is-100000-after-tax\/\">\u00a3100k<\/a> (including bonuses) before taxes, you won\u2019t be eligible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your child<\/strong> \ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67\u200d\ud83d\udc66<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s pretty simple &#8211; your child has to be under the age of 11 and live with you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adoptive children are eligible, but foster children are not unfortunately.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-nude m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>If your child has a disability, they have to receive one of the following to be eligible:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disability Living Allowance<\/li>\n<li>Personal Independence Payment<\/li>\n<li>Armed Forces Independence Payment<\/li>\n<li>Child Disability Payment (Scotland only)<\/li>\n<li>Adult Disability Payment (Scotland only)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Your child can also be eligible if they are certified as blind or severely sight-impaired. You can claim until your child is 17.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your immigration status<\/strong> \u2708\ufe0f<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You or your partner must have a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/national-insurance-number-nino\/\">National Insurance number<\/a> and at least one of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>British\/Irish citizenship<\/li><li>Settled\/pre-settled status<ul><li>Or, you\u2019ve applied and waiting for a decision<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Permission to access public funds&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can check your UK residence card to check if you have permission to access public funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You or your partner might still be eligible as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/frontier-worker-permit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frontier worker<\/a>, if you\u2019re living in an EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What if I already get the 30 hours free childcare?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents, don\u2019t fret. If you\u2019re claiming the 30 hours free childcare, then you have nothing to worry about. You can receive both at the same time, woop!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you\u2019re receiving any of the following benefits, you will not be eligible to claim the tax-free childcare on top:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/blog\/tax-credits-changing-universal-credit\/\">Tax credits<\/a> (working or child)<\/li><li>Universal credit<\/li><li>A childcare grant or bursary<\/li><li>Childcare vouchers<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you apply for tax-free childcare and are accepted, your other benefit will be cancelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do I have to mention my partner (or ex partner)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a partner, definitely mention it in your application.&nbsp;Only one of you can claim. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re separated on the other hand, you can choose which one of you will apply if you\u2019re jointly responsible for a child. If you&#8217;re struggling to come to an agreement, you can apply separately and HMRC will choose who receives the childcare account &#8211; it happens!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do I apply for Tax-free Childcare?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, you need to apply through HMRC. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/apply-for-tax-free-childcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apply here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pro tip &#8211; have the following ready for when you apply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You National Insurance number<\/li><li>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/utr-number\/\">UTR number<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-purple m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find out if you\u2019re eligible for both tax-free childcare and 30 hours free childcare through the one application, which only takes a mere 20 minutes to complete.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, you\u2019ll find out almost immediately but it can take up to 7 days to confirm if you\u2019re eligible.
