Sorting your taxes isn\u2019t anywhere near as complicated as moving countries <em>(phew!)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the blog below we\u2019ll answer all those burning questions you have about earning lots and living abroad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Let\u2019s dive in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Do I pay taxes in the UK if I live abroad?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Most likely yes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">The basic rule is that when you live abroad, you still have to pay income tax on any income that you earn from the UK. This includes things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wages\/salary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pensions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rental income (including <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/airbnb-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Airbnb<\/a> earnings)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you sell <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/capital-gains-tax-on-property\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">residential property<\/a> or land in the UK (you won\u2019t normally pay tax when you sell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/tax-uk-income-live-abroad\/selling-or-inheriting-assets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other assets<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Savings interest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will I get a personal allowance?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Personal Allowance is the amount of tax-free income that everyone in the UK is entitled to receive each year &#8211; the current amount for this tax year is \u00a312,570. So even if you live abroad, you\u2019ll only pay tax on your UK income above that threshold.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>However\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you earn over \u00a3100,000 per year from your UK income, your Personal Allowance is reduced by \u00a31 for every \u00a32 over \u00a3100,000. It prevents you from paying tax twice on the same income. With a DTA, you can claim tax relief in the UK so you don\u2019t end up getting taxed twice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I rent out property in the UK &#8211; is that taxed too?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yup!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll have to pay income tax on your UK rental income even if you live abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>AND<\/em> you might also have to pay <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/capital-gains-tax-cgt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Capital Gains Tax (CGT)<\/a> if you make a gain when you sell your UK property or land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tax in 10(ish) seconds - what is Capital Gains Tax?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZUdtnBFew8o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You pay both of these either via Self Assessment or through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/hm-revenue-customs\/contact\/non-resident-landlords\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Non-resident Landlord (NRL) <\/a>scheme. This is a government scheme that lets landlords (who are residents outside the UK for more than 6 months) have their tax deducted by their letting agent or tenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I report my income to HMRC if I live abroad?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First things first, to report your income you\u2019ll need to fill out and send a Self Assessment tax return each year. This also means you\u2019ll need to register for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-for-self-assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Self Assessment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike those who live in the UK, you can\u2019t directly use HMRC\u2019s online services to file your tax return if you live abroad. Instead, you have to file either by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using a certain type of HMRC-certified online software<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filling out two paper forms (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/self-assessment-residence-remittance-basis-etc-sa109\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SA109<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/sa100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SA100<\/a>) and submitting them by post<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using a qualified accountant or an online tax service (like Taxfix!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High earner tax advice from Taxfix!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Paying UK tax as a high earner might sound pretty confusing &#8211; <em>especially if you\u2019re living abroad<\/em> &#8211; but it doesn\u2019t have to be complicated at all!
