But have you ever heard of a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/henry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HENRY?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This latest acronym is taking the tax world by storm\u2026well, sort of<em>.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s not just the term that\u2019s becoming more common, the number of real-life HENRYs is increasing across the globe, especially in the UK.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while this lifestyle sounds great, it\u2019s really not all it lives up to be. It can refer to a certain type of worker: think a young millennial who has a big six-figure salary (maybe as a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/blog\/pay-wars-magic-circle-salaries-and-what-it-means-for-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">junior lawyer<\/a>), but who doesn\u2019t have much left after taxes, bills and personal expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rapid growth in a HENRY\u2019s income has been surpassed by their lifestyle, meaning that as their salary increased, so too have their spending habits. It\u2019s not surprising then, to find out that a lot of HENRYs also tend to have high credit card debts.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where does the term come from?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term HENRY was coined in 2013 by a writer from the US magazine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2019\/10\/24\/henrys-high-earning-not-rich-millennials\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortune<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who described this type of worker as having: \u201ca higher than average income, little to no savings, and low material wealth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is there anything good about the HENRY lifestyle?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not a lot, no\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On paper, the lavish lifestyle that so many HENRYs lead might sound appealing, but the reality is very, <em>very<\/em> different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HENRYs might be able to afford status symbols of wealth &#8211; think Gucci handbags, luxury holidays to Ibiza or a flashy (ish) car &#8211; but the truth is that they\u2019re not actually wealthy. They may be able to drop \u00a31,000 on a bottle of champagne and post a picture of it on Instagram, but they don\u2019t have \u00a31,000 saved up in the bank if you catch our drift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their lack of actual wealth is usually down to how much they&#8217;re taxed, and how little they save. Unfortunately, as soon as the income dries up, a HENRY\u2019s party will come to an abrupt end without any savings in place for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to tell if you\u2019re a HENRY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Worried you might be a HENRY? Here\u2019s how you can tell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Earning \u00a3100,00k+ a year*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have a lavish lifestyle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Living paycheck to paycheck<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having little saved or few (if any) investments in place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bonus: you\u2019re a millennial<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Answered yes to everything? Then you might be a HENRY!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* = There is a slight difference between a UK HENRY and a US HENRY. In the States, a HENRY is someone who earns between $100K and $250K (minimum) a year, rather than the \u00a3100,000 figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Okay, so how do I stop being a HENRY?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So you think you might be a HENRY\u2026well, the good news is that you have plenty of time to change your spending habits and start saving for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few small changes you can make that will go a long, long way to helping you ditch the HENRY status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Focus on long-term saving<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you can do is to build up an emergency \u2018rainy day\u2019 fund. This should roughly be the equivalent of at least 3 months worth of your expenses (rent, utility bills, etc). Put this money in a savings account or <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/isa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ISA<\/a> with a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/savings-interest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high-interest rate<\/a> &#8211; these small savings will add up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After this, focus on putting a regular sum of money from each paycheck into either a savings account or an investment. This will help you, in the long run, to build up wealth for your retirement or, in the short term, put a deposit down on a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make the most of the allowances available to high earners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main benefits of being a high earner is that there are a few allowances available to you to help you reduce your tax exposure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make the most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/personal-savings-allowance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal savings allowance<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/dividend-allowance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dividend allowance<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/capital-gains-tax-allowance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">capital gains tax allowance<\/a>.
