Cross-border workers are also sometimes referred to as frontier workers.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-nude m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p>Example: Sara is a UK resident who travels via Eurostar to France for her work during the week, and heads back to the UK at the weekend. Just imagine living in the UK but working in Disneyland Paris! \ud83e\udd2f<\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What country do you pay tax in if you\u2019re a cross-border worker?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each country has its own rules when it comes to tax. Paying tax in two countries isn\u2019t impossible, but it can be avoided if the country you are working in has a \u2018double-taxation agreement\u2019 with the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The UK has a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/double-taxation-agreement-dta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">double-taxation agreement<\/a>\u2019 with many countries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This agreement means cross-border workers can apply for full or partial tax relief<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The official list of countries with this agreement is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/tax-treaties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No double taxation agreement = you may have to pay double tax \ud83d\ude2e\u200d\ud83d\udca8<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is a double-taxation agreement between a country and the UK, the country you pay tax in will be detailed in the individual agreement, and so will the country you claim tax relief in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do I pay tax in the UK as a cross-border worker?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The country you want to work in has a double-taxation agreement with the UK, woohoo! \ud83e\udd73 But now you\u2019re stuck wondering if HMRC will automatically tax your wages for you. Unfortunately, no.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a cross-border worker, declaring your foreign earnings is your ultimate responsibility, so you will have to submit a tax return to HMRC before the deadline. You will need to submit a tax return to HMRC as well as find out how to pay tax in the country you work in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are cross-border workers eligible for tax credit?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cross-border workers may be able to get tax credits as long as they\u2019re regularly travelling from the UK to another country for work. How much tax credits you receive depends on your circumstances and the amount of hours you work per week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a cross-border worker travels to the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein for work, they may be able to claim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/working-tax-credit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working tax credits<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What documents do you need to become a cross-border worker?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If like Sara, you dream of swapping out the National Rail for the Eurostar, there\u2019s a few things you should know beforehand:<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <ul>\n<li>You will probably need a visa or work permit to work in most countries<\/li>\n<li>If you were working in another country before 1 January 2021, you may need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/frontier-workers-in-eu-and-efta-countries#your-rights-as-a-frontier-worker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frontier permit<\/a> to continue working abroad (another consequence of Brexit\ud83d\ude05)<\/li>\n<li>The rules are different for each country so be sure to check<\/li>\n<li>The eurostar runs every thirty minutes \ud83d\ude84<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not quite sure how cross-border tax works for workers?
