But as ever like the ghost of Christmas past, HMRC is looming over to remind you not to forget the tax implications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you had no idea tax was even a consideration, then read on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First of all, what in the world is crypto?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If crypto isn\u2019t your thang, here\u2019s a quick rundown of the basics. Crypto is short for cryptocurrency. It\u2019s a form of digital currency. Some examples of crypto coins and tokens are Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The whole concept of crypto is extremely advanced and technical but it\u2019s pretty interesting, too. First of all, it\u2019s created using encryption algorithms. Just wow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second of all, it\u2019s distributed outside of government control unlike traditional currencies such as GBP or USD.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And thirdly, it doesn\u2019t actually have any central authority at all. So anything less than it is tax-free, and unlike other taxes, only <em>profit<\/em> is taxable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Gifting<\/em><\/strong> crypto, however, is a tad bit techy so listen up. \ud83d\udde3\ufe0f<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-nude m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p>If you\u2019re gifting to a friend, parent, or anyone <strong><em>but<\/em><\/strong> your spouse, you\u2019ll need to:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work out what the crypto on the gifting date is worth (in \u00a3)<\/li>\n<li>How much it\u2019s currently worth will be considered as income for CGT purposes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udf81 If you gift crypto to your spouse, you won\u2019t have to pay any tax on this (and your other half will never even suspect you\u2019ve forgotten to get them a gift this year.) \ud83c\udf81<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/donating-to-charity\">Donating crypto<\/a> to selected registered charities is also tax-free.<\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much Capital Gains Tax will I have to pay?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two rates for CGT on cryptocurrency:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Basic rate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher rate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The rate you pay depends on your income:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you earn up to \u00a350,270, you\u2019ll pay 10% CGT&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you earn over \u00a350,271, you\u2019ll pay 20% CGT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p>Bear in mind that the Capital Gains Tax rates are different for different assets i.e the highest rate of CGT for crypto is 20%, but the highest rate of CGT for property is 24%.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Read more about the CGT rates <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/the-tax-basics\/capital-gains-tax-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are there any other taxes to pay when gifting crypto?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, you\u2019ll only have to pay Capital Gains Tax if you give crypto to someone as a gift.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you receive crypto as a gift, you also usually won\u2019t have to pay any tax unless you decide to sell it on or even go as far as gifting it to someone else\u2026 which would be pretty bold. But hey, we\u2019re not judging. \ud83e\udd37<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I pay tax when gifting crypto?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Picture this: it\u2019s the morning of the 25th December and you hand your brother a little ribboned box. When he opens it, there it is &#8211; a crypto wallet. \ud83e\udd29 OK, technically a crypto wallet would be online and not in a box, but run with us here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well after explaining to the rest of the family the reason the box is empty, you\u2019ll then need to register for Self Assessment (if you haven\u2019t already).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you\u2019ll have to work out how much Capital Gains Tax you owe.
