The <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/tax-changes\/how-to-make-tax-digital-mtd-self-assessment\/\">Making Tax Digital<\/a> rollout for the self-employed, landlords and small business owners has been delayed\u2026 again. See <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/limited-companies\/vat-threshold-uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more<\/span><\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Originally, self-employed folk, landlords, and small business owners were to file quarterly taxes with MTD-compatible <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/accounting-software\/\">software<\/a> by 2024. But that\u2019s now been pushed to 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t worry, if you\u2019re already a Taxfix user (hey friend \ud83d\udc4b) then we\u2019ll have a smooth rollover. We\u2019ll announce closer to the ever-moving time\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is MTD for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, MTD is still only for VAT-registered businesses. Heads up &#8211; if that\u2019s you and you haven\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/tax-changes\/how-do-i-sign-up-for-mtd-with-hmrc\/\">signed up for MTD<\/a> already, you need to. Pronto. Otherwise, you could face <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/self-assessment-basics\/what-are-the-making-tax-digital-penalties\/\">penalties<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, it\u2019ll be for everyone who needs to file a tax return or pay VAT.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you already file a tax return, you can be sure MTD will apply to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The switch over to MTD affects business owners, landlords and the self-employed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the key changes for MTD?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main changes that come with the MTD freeze announcement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, the rollout for landlords and the self-employed will be delayed by another two years, so Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) MTD will go live from April 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, everyone who previously had to file quarterly taxes by 2026 won\u2019t have to anymore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone earning over \u00a310,000 in untaxed income would have had to file using MTD. But HMRC have now introduced a tiered system which means depending on what you earn, you may not need to file using MTD until later on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-nude m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p>If you\u2019re wondering why HMRC decided to slow the rollout, they stated that they understand the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-announces-phased-mandation-of-making-tax-digital-for-itsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cchallenging economic environment, and the transition to Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) represents a significant change to taxpayers<\/a>\u201d and decided to push it back.<\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do tiered incomes mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It means you\u2019ll need to use the MTD system according to your earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Businesses, landlords and self-employed people earning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> More than \u00a350,000 will have to file their taxes using MTD by April 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between \u00a330,000 and \u00a350,000 will have to switch to MTD by April 2027<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Regulations for businesses, landlords and self-employed people earning less than \u00a330,000 haven\u2019t yet been announced. But HMRC is looking into how to make sure that the change in the tax system isn\u2019t tolling or troubling for smaller businesses\/lower earners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All VAT-registered businesses <em>should <\/em>now use MTD software to file their taxes as of April 2022, even if they earn less than \u00a330,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When will MTD officially roll out?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like we said, VAT-registered companies are already declaring and paying their taxes this way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The landlords, self-employed folk, and business owners earning over \u00a350,000 will need to file their taxes through MTD as early as April 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, two years from the original April 2024 date and three years from when this was written (2023).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-cta-mini m-purple m-align-left\">\n    \n    <div class=\"b-cta-mini__content\">\n\n        \n        <h2 class=\"b-cta-mini__title\">Want to know how MTD for ITSA will work? <\/h2>\n\n        \n        \n        <div class=\"b-cta-mini__body\">\n            <div class=\"b-block-body\"><p>Get the no-nonsense lowdown on how we&#8217;ll make digital filing simple.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n        <\/div>\n\n        \n        \n        <div class=\"b-cta-mini__action\">\n\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/mtd-for-itsa\/\" class=\"c-button m-large  m-mobile-fullwidth\">Learn more <\/a>\n\n\n        <\/div>\n\n        \n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-cta-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does that mean I won\u2019t need to switch over to MTD?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kind of. It just means that you won\u2019t need to switch over just yet. But everyone will have to switch over &#8211; it\u2019s just a matter of when.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you\u2019re digitally exempt, everyone who falls under the categories we mentioned will need to switch over to <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/making-tax-digital\/\">Making Tax Digital <\/a>as it will replace the current Self Assessment system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re self-employed, a landlord, or a business owner (not VAT-registered) then you\u2019ll have to wait until 2026 to see if MTD goes ahead and for what tiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Either way, you know we\u2019ll be here to update and support you when it does!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hey there!
