Chatbots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are HMRC closing their Self Assessment helpline?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HMRC are hopeful that the temporary closure of their Self Assessment helpline will prioritise customers with urgent queries &#8211; but, what about the rest of us? \ud83d\ude22<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The helpline\u2019s new seasonal model will run between 12 June and 4 September 2023 <em>&#8211; <\/em>that\u2019s nearly a quarter of the year! \ud83d\ude27<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you call the helpline, don\u2019t expect Barbara to pick up at the other end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be redirected to HMRC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tax.service.gov.uk\/ask-hmrc\/chat\/online-services-helpdesk?_ga=2.186858337.899599961.1671788822-1743856667.1669029549\">digital services<\/a> instead. \ud83d\udc4b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In case you were wondering\u2026&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <ul>\n<li>\ud83d\udcc9The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-65894930\">BBC reports<\/a> that &#8220;In the past five years, HMRC\u2019s customer service staff has decreased from 25,500 to 19,500,&#8221; with customers being guided towards digital systems instead<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe closure of the helpline should free up 350 advisers to take urgent calls\u201d<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/hmrc-to-trial-seasonal-self-assessment-helpline--2\">HMRC<\/a>, \u201cfocusing on urgent queries should allow advisers to answer around 6,600 calls each day\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s the Self Assessment web chat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HMRC claim that any query that can be resolved over the phone, can also be sorted via webchat. \ud83e\udd14&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hate to shade HMRC, but we\u2019ve spotted a big oversight\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HMRC seem to have forgotten about digitally excluded people, e.g. your grandad who may not be quite as tech-savvy as you.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only have they caused quite a stir, but they have now left many of you wondering, \u201cwho can I turn to in times of tax need?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, Taxfix, of course!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst HMRC figure out whether the closure of their helpline is going to be a hit, spoiler &#8211; it\u2019s not, we\u2019ve got the answers to your questions right here. \ud83d\ude4c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let\u2019s get started.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I need to file a Self Assessment tax return?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A Self Assessment, or <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/personal-tax-return\/\">personal tax return<\/a>, is filed by <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/taxpayer\/\">taxpayers<\/a> (or better yet &#8211; their accountants) to declare their untaxed income to HMRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After filing your tax return, you\u2019ll receive your tax bill (boo!) or you\u2019ll find out that you\u2019re getting a tax rebate (woohoo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst most people\u2019s income is taxed through a system called <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/paye\/\">PAYE<\/a> (pay as you earn), there are other reasons why you might still need to file a tax return:<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-purple m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <ul>\n<li>If you\u2019ve earned over \u00a31,000 from self-employment<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019ve made between \u00a32,500 and \u00a39,999 from renting out a property, after allowable expenses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve got a full list of reasons you might need to file a tax return, in <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/self-assessment-basics\/who-needs-to-file-a-tax-return\/\">our guide here<\/a>!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dates to remember:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u274c12th June &#8211; HMRC closes Self Assessment helpline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u27054th September &#8211; HMRC reopens Self Assessment helpline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83d\udd8a\ufe0f5th October &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/log-in-file-self-assessment-tax-return\">Self Assessment registration<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83d\uddd2\ufe0f31st October &#8211; Income tax filing <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/self-assessment-basics\/uk-tax-year-dates-and-filing-deadlines\/\">deadline <\/a>(paper)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83d\udcbb31st January &#8211; Income tax filing deadline (online)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All you need is a Google account, so there are no excuses! \ud83e\udee3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I file my tax return?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few ways to go about it.
