But what\u2019s worse is having to file one to pay back your child benefit!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The High Income Child Benefit charge has left many of you understandably confused. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s paid automatically, but you&#8217;re not necessarily entitled to it in full &#8211; bizarre, right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Child Benefit and how does it work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Child Benefit is a tax-free payment paid by the government to parents or anyone responsible for raising a child. \ud83d\udc4f<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p>You\u2019re eligible to claim the payment if the child you raise is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\ud83d\udc76Under 16 and in education\/training<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>\ud83c\udf93Under 18 and in education\/training<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>\ud83d\udcb0You earn under \u00a380,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But remember:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only one adult in your household can claim Child Benefit for your child<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s no limit on how many children you can claim for<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much Child Benefit will I receive?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2025\/26 tax year, you can claim:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a326.05 a week for your first child<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a316.95 a week for each of your other children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Who said there was no such thing as a favourite child? \ud83e\udd2d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also get <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/national-insurance\/\">National Insurance<\/a> (NI) credits to help fill in gaps in your National Insurance record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This helps to ensure you qualify for certain benefits including your <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/state-pension\/\">State Pension<\/a> &#8211; winner-winner. \ud83e\udd11<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you receive Child Benefit, then your child will also receive an NI number without having to apply, shortly before they turn 16. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Claiming your Child Benefit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/hm-revenue-customs\/contact\/child-benefit\">contact HMRC <\/a>to talk about, change or continue claiming your Child Benefit. But, the amount you\u2019ll pay depends on your <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/adjusted-net-income\/\">adjusted net income<\/a>. \ud83e\udd45<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your adjusted net income is your total taxable income. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2023\/jul\/19\/child-benefit-parents-hmrc-fines-self-assessment-tax-form\">The Guardian<\/a>, as of August 2020, \u201cmore than 620,000 families had opted out of receiving Child Benefit to avoid being charged\u201d. \ud83d\udc4b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If like these families, you also want to opt out of receiving Child Benefit, there\u2019s a few things to know first!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you want to opt out, you should still fill in the Child Benefit claim form.
