Their figure on your tax bill doesn\u2019t match what you paid! \ud83d\ude32<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why has this happened, <\/em>you ask? Well, HMRC probably know something we don\u2019t\u2026 \ud83e\uddd0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re not talking about your juicy secrets\u2026 \ud83d\udc8bJust your income, payments and fines! We will, however, share why this might have happened.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You\u2019ve underpaid your tax to HMRC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve paid too little tax by the end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/blog\/what-is-the-tax-year\/\">tax year<\/a>, 5 April, expect a knock at your door from HMRC. \u270a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not literally, but do check your post box, as HMRC will send you either a tax calculation letter (a.k.a a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/p800\/\">P800<\/a>) or a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/simple-assessment\/\">Simple Assessment<\/a> letter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re employed or receive a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/pension\/\">pension<\/a>, expect your letter to arrive between June and November, telling you how much tax you owe. \ud83d\udcc5<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re registered for <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/self-assessment\/\">Self Assessment<\/a> your tax bill will be adjusted automatically, which means no fan mail from HMRC. \ud83d\udcee<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You\u2019ve not paid a penalty to HMRC&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HMRC doesn\u2019t miss a thing and if you\u2019ve missed or made a late payment, they\u2019ll be sure to pull you up on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is how HMRC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/late-payment-penalty\/\">penalties <\/a>work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>How late you are<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Fine (each gets added to the others!)<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>between 1 day and 3 months<\/td><td>\u00a3100 flat fine<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>between 3 months and 6 months<\/td><td>\u00a310 each day<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>between 6 months and 12 months<\/td><td>\u00a3300 flat or 5% of your tax bill (whichever is greater)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>over 12 months<\/td><td>\u00a3300 flat or 5% of your tax bill (whichever is greater)<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/self-assessment-appeal-against-penalties-for-late-filing-and-late-payment-sa370\">appeal<\/a> against the penalty if you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/hmrc-internal-manuals\/compliance-handbook\/ch160200#:~:text=How%20HMRC%20interprets%20'Reasonable%20Excuse,care%20to%20meet%20that%20obligation.\">reasonable excuse<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pro tip: If you pay your outstanding tax within the first 15 days after the due date, you can avoid the penalty.\ud83e\udef8<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, if we\u2019re unaware of your penalties from past tax returns, you\u2019ll receive a different calculation for your tax bill from us compared to HMRC.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HMRC believe you haven&#8217;t declared some of your income&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-yellow m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p>There are a few reasons why you may not have declared some of your income to HMRC:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<li>You didn\u2019t realise you had to tell HMRC about it<\/li>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<li>You were unsure how to declare it<\/li>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<li>You didn\u2019t declare it because you couldn\u2019t pay it<\/li>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>These are all easy mistakes to make. But to avoid a telling-off from HMRC, it&#8217;s best to notify them as soon as you can. \ud83d\ude05&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p>You should tell HMRC if you earned other <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/taxable-income\/\">taxable income<\/a> such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\ud83c\udfe1<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/renting-out-a-property\/paying-tax\">Renting out property<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\ud83d\udc8d<a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/capital-gain\/\">Capital gains<\/a> e.g. selling property, valuable items or shares<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>\ud83d\ude97<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/working-for-yourself\">Working for yourself<\/a>, including if you buy or sell items regularly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>If any of this income takes you over your <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/personal-allowance\/\">Allowance<\/a>, you\u2019ll pay tax on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you don\u2019t usually file a tax return, you&#8217;ll need to register for Self Assessment to declare any income you\u2019ve not paid tax on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve already registered but have not declared all of your income, you can make a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/self-assessment-tax-returns\/corrections\">change to your return<\/a>. \ud83d\udcdd&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This also applies if you\u2019re a UK resident but earn <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/the-tax-basics\/how-to-pay-tax-on-your-foreign-income\/\">foreign income<\/a>. You\u2019ll probably need to file a Self Assessment. \u2708\ufe0f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t report this income, you may have to pay both the undeclared tax and a penalty worth up to double the tax you already owe &#8211; yikes \ud83d\ude2c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For any of these reasons, HMRC might suspect you have some undeclared income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ll take this into consideration when you pay your tax bill, which means you\u2019ll probably owe more tax than you expected to and your tax bill will be different to the one Taxfix gave you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other reasons why your Taxfix calculation might be different to HMRC\u2019s:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019ve failed to upload some of your income to your Taxfix account &#8211; it won\u2019t be included in our calculation for your tax return<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have a previously incorrect bill and HMRC will amend it &#8211; this can be at any time, so they may have added this to your calculation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to check you\u2019re paying the right amount of tax to HMRC:&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-purple m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/self-assessment-basics\/most-important-hmrc-contact-numbers\/\">Contact HMRC<\/a> to check you\u2019ve not underpaid your tax<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>Contact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/contact-hmrc\">HMRC<\/a> to check for any outstanding penalties \ud83d\udcc5<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>Declare all of your income to HMRC and us<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>Upload all of your income to your Taxfix account \ud83d\udcbb<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t Panic!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you know there\u2019s no need to panic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If HMRC believes you owe more than we\u2019ve calculated, it\u2019s probably down to one of these few reasons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve got any further questions, you\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can contact HMRC, your Taxfix accountant, or our support team who are always happy to help!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ve filed your tax return and paid your bill on time but HMRC aren\u2019t impressed.
