What is it? Who\u2019s it for? And, will it ever come to fruit(ion)? \ud83c\udf47<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although today\u2019s a celebratory day for some, others may feel not-so-peachy (cough-cough carnivores). But don\u2019t throw away your BBQs quite yet!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a meat tax?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In most countries, a meat tax is still largely hypothetical. But, with growing concerns over climate change, Dutch, French and German governments, to name a few, have realised it\u2019s time we face the <em>mooo-sic. <\/em>\ud83d\udc42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a tax on meat, scientists believe we\u2019d improve both our environment and our health. Doesn\u2019t sound too cynical, right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea behind it? Well, it\u2019s assumed that higher meat prices would discourage shoppers from buying and consuming meat as frequently. Although, we\u2019re sure some of you may beg to differ. <em>Spare the ribs! <\/em>\ud83e\udd69<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How\u2019s my health?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, we\u2019re not talking about your financial health. Instead, we\u2019re taking an oat chai latte break to serve a few non-tax facts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that consuming too much meat isn\u2019t great for your physical health? Well, if you didn\u2019t, don\u2019t <em>beef<\/em> us. It was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/eat-well\/food-types\/meat-nutrition\/\">NHS<\/a> who said it first! \ud83e\udd12<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to research by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/whats-the-beef-with-red-meat\">Harvard Medical School<\/a>, there\u2019s a clear link between a high intake of red and processed meats and medical conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heavy-hitting stuff, we know. But, it explains why some people favour a tax which would presumably encourage us to consume less of it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s up with the environment?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing. Meat production isn\u2019t exactly environmentally friendly. \ud83d\ude2c<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-yellow m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <ul>\n<li>It contributes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.uk\/news\/why-meat-is-bad-for-the-environment\/\">deforestation<\/a> and forest fires &#8211; especially when farmers deliberately start fires to clear land for cattle grazing \ud83d\udd25<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>It has a huge impact on our climate &#8211; meat production contributes to the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/sentientmedia.org\/why-is-eating-meat-bad-for-the-environment\/#:~:text=Meat%20production%20significantly%20contributes%20to,This%20leads%20to%20global%20warming.\">greenhouse gases<\/a>, including methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere \ud83c\udf0d<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>It can <a href=\"https:\/\/thehumaneleague.org.uk\/article\/is-beef-production-bad-for-the-environment?gclid=Cj0KCQjwy4KqBhD0ARIsAEbCt6gBw3jbkkp4AHETDTYjsoBzh-wIyZkmHqsGNt4ptvupsnGmJLYgdd4aAni9EALw_wcB\">pollute<\/a> water sources &#8211; as animal manure accumulates, large amounts of nitrates and phosphates can pass into the soil and the groundwater \ud83d\udeb0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>But, we\u2019d <em>guava <\/em>not be environmental educators or soil scientists. We\u2019re here to talk tax.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How high are the <em>steaks<\/em>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the moment, we\u2019d say medium-rare. It\u2019s unlikely that we\u2019ll see any imminent changes to our supermarket shops. \ud83d\udd2e<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, there\u2019s no need to stockpile sausages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, there are concerns over how a meat tax could affect the UK\u2019s lowest-income families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which brings us right back to our home turf. So, let\u2019s talk tax.&nbsp;\ud83c\udfe1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our response to this concern is that it would depend on how the government spends the revenue earned from a meat tax. A daunting prospect, we know. \ud83e\udee0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/meat-tax-no-uk-politician-is-calling-for-one-but-maybe-they-should-215112\">absolute terms<\/a>, higher-income households spend more on meat, meaning they would contribute the most taxes. And low-income families might even benefit if the revenue was spent on social welfare. This is, of course, a big if.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing we can assume is that with a meat tax in place, the government may be more inclined to <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/meat-tax-no-uk-politician-is-calling-for-one-but-maybe-they-should-215112\">lower value-added taxes<\/a> on fruit and vegetables.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-neutral m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>value added tax (VAT) rates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 2025\/26 tax year \ud83d\udc47<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tax rate<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What the rate applies to<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standard rate<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20%<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most goods and services<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced rate<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5%<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goods and services like children\u2019s car seats and home energy<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zero rate<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0%<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goods and services like most food, books and children\u2019s clothes<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Businesses earning more than \u00a390,000 in a tax year must register for VAT. See <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/limited-companies\/vat-threshold-uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more<\/span><\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Until we <em>meat <\/em>again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, will there be a tax on meat?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re afraid it seems like the jury\u2019s still out on this one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, one thing we do know is that there will be no new tax without careful (we hope) consideration for our economy first. \ud83d\udcb8<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And agricultural economics is no simple matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the University of Bristol, the introduction of a meat tax could cost the UK\u2019s economy \u00a3242 million a year. Yikes! \ud83e\udd2f<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-nude m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what else they found out:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Savings resulting from reduced climate emissions were calculated in the region of \u00a3100 million per annum. \ud83d\ude32<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, a meat tax could also force grazing livestock farms out of the industry.
