That\u2019s where the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/p11d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>P11D form<\/strong><\/a> comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how it works, and what you need to do \ud83d\udc47<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are benefits in kind?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Benefits in kind<\/strong> are non-cash perks or advantages your employer provides on top of your salary. These are things, like:<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-yellow m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <ul>\n<li>Company cars and fuel \u26fd<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>Interest-free or low-interest loans<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>Private medical insurance<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>Subsidised meals or travel<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>Gym memberships \ud83c\udfcb\ufe0f<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>Mobile phones (unless they\u2019re work-only)<!-- \/wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>Vouchers or non-cash gifts \ud83c\udf81<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>These are all considered <strong>taxable benefits<\/strong>, and if they weren\u2019t taxed through your payslip, you\u2019ll likely need to declare them on your <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/self-assessment-tax-returns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self Assessment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a P11D and why does it matter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>P11D form<\/strong> is what your employer uses to report your <strong>benefits in kind<\/strong> to HMRC each year. It\u2019s a summary of everything you received that could affect your tax bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your employer files the <strong>P11D form<\/strong> with HMRC by 6 July after the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/self-assessment-basics\/when-does-the-tax-year-end-in-the-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tax year ends<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You should receive a copy if you were given any taxable benefits not handled through PAYE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll use your<strong> P11D form<\/strong> to fill in your tax return accurately<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So even though your employer files the <strong>P11D form<\/strong>, you\u2019re responsible for declaring those benefits if you&#8217;re completing a tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I get my P11D form?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your <strong>P11D<\/strong> hasn\u2019t landed in your inbox or postbox, here\u2019s what to do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask your employer, HR or payroll team<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check whether your benefits were taxed through your salary; if they were, you won\u2019t get a <strong>P11D<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019ve left the company, request a copy by email or post \u2709\ufe0f<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Still can\u2019t find it? You can ask HMRC directly. And once you\u2019ve got it, keep it in a safe place. You\u2019ll need it for your return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I need to declare benefits in kind?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everyone needs to declare <strong>benefits in kind, <\/strong>but if you\u2019re filing a tax return, it depends on a few things working together. Ask yourself: <\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-yellow m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <ul>\n<li data-start=\"440\" data-end=\"489\">Are you filing a Self Assessment this year?<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"492\" data-end=\"573\">Did you receive any <strong data-start=\"512\" data-end=\"532\">taxable benefits<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"576\" data-end=\"658\">Has your employer given you a <strong data-start=\"606\" data-end=\"619\">P11D form <\/strong>(or should have)?<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"723\">Were those benefits not already taxed through your salary?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>If the answer is <em>yes<\/em> to all of the above, then you\u2019ll need to declare your<strong> benefits in kind<\/strong> on your tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019re not 100% sure, it\u2019s worth double-checking with your employer or scanning your payslips. \ud83e\uddd0 It\u2019s an easy way to avoid underpaying tax without realising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to check if you have benefits in kind to declare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not sure what\u2019s been reported or if anything applies to you? If so, they should give you a copy \ud83d\udcc4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check your payslips<\/strong> \u2013 if the benefits were taxed through your salary (a.k.a through payroll), they might not appear on a P11D, but you still need to be clear on what was included&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Left the company?<\/strong> Your former employer still has to give you your P11D if you received any taxable benefits while you were there<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Still unsure?<\/strong> You can always contact <strong>HMRC<\/strong> to check if a P11D has been filed in your name \u260e\ufe0f<br><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to declare benefits in kind on your tax return&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you get to the \u2018Employment\u2019 section of your tax return, you\u2019ll be asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Did you receive any <strong>benefits in kind<\/strong>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What kind?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have they already been taxed through <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/paye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PAYE<\/a>?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Your <strong>P11D<\/strong> breaks it all down by category.
