Whether you\u2019re self-employed working in a salon or self-employed working privately, you\u2019ll need to declare your income to HMRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you pay taxes as a self-employed hairdresser?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As with any other sole trader, you must first declare to HMRC that you are self-employed. This is done through a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/self-assessment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self Assessment<\/a>. It\u2019s basically the way to declare untaxed earnings by explaining where you work, how much you\u2019re paid and how often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must register for Self Assessment by 5th October of any given tax year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to actually paying your bill, you\u2019ll need what\u2019s known as a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number. We\u2019ll come onto what you can expense a little later in the guide but until then, just know that it\u2019s super-important that you make a record of everything that you earn and spend.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether that\u2019s by invoicing, making spreadsheets or uploading your receipts onto an online platform, it\u2019s all of paramount importance. HMRC can request evidence of your income and expenses up to 22 months after you pay your tax bill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Invoices for jobs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receipts from customer cuts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel receipts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Premises rent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chair hire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any other relevant income\/expenses from your business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where can I pay my taxes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve got everything ready and prepared, there are a few ways to pay:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Via HMRC yourself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pay-self-assessment-tax-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With a personal accountant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using an online tax return provider (ahem\u2026 like us)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can pay by Direct Debit (if you\u2019ve set it up with HMRC before), BACS, with your debit\/credit card or by cheque.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much do I owe?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What you owe depends on what you\u2019ve earned.
