Tattoo artists are therefore not often employed by the studios but work for themselves instead.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re starting out as a tattoo artist, you should consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you have enough income to support you financially?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are you prepared for when you pay tax?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you know what you can expense and how?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you understand the tax return process?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Income as a self-employed tattoo artist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, tattoo artists\u2019 income is not purely made from doing tattoos. There are two taxes to be aware of: income tax and National Insurance. What you owe is based on how much money you earn every year. The rates are subject to change, often in April following the Chancellor of the Exchequer&#8217;s <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/autumn-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Autumn Budget<\/a>. These include the <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/jobseekers-allowance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Job Seekers\u2019 Allowance<\/a>, the <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/marriage-allowance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marriage Allowance<\/a> and the state pension.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But not all National Insurance classes are created equal. As an employed individual, you have the security of not only employment law but access to all of the state-provided safety nets. For a self-employed tattoo artist, it&#8217;s not so simple. You have to pay class 4 National Insurance. Or, put simply, to reduce your tax bill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, you must keep a record of everything that you spend and earn. Ideally, doing this digitally is much easier to manage, but it\u2019s up to you how to track your business finances.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s at the discretion of HMRC to decide what\u2019s an allowable expense.
