If you\u2019re buying or making clothes\/products for selling on Depop, for example, you\u2019ll probably have to pay tax on this. HMRC defines this as a lack of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/hmrc-internal-manuals\/business-income-manual\/bim20260\">pride of possession<\/a>\u201d, which basically means that it holds no value to you other than as an item for trade.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you are covered tax-free by a few things.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Trading Allowance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/trading-allowance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trading Allowance<\/a> enables you to make \u00a31,000 profit tax-free which can be useful if you\u2019re working full-time alongside your Depop gig.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Personal Allowance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t work and you sell on Depop as a hobby business, you don\u2019t pay Income Tax on profit less than \u00a312,570 each tax year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I\u2019m selling old things on Depop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re selling your old clothes on Depop, the likelihood is that you won\u2019t have to pay tax on this. If you buy some jeans for \u00a390, for example, and sell them years later for \u00a345 on Depop, you\u2019re not turning over a profit so you won\u2019t pay tax on this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The frequency that you sell is also important to HMRC. If you sell often and consistently throughout the year, this may be viewed as trading &#8211; and you might owe tax. But if you just list items on Depop when you need some emergency cash at the end of the month, this will be seen as personal earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How will HMRC know that I\u2019m selling on Depop?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisismoney.co.uk\/money\/news\/article-4107122\/How-taxman-spies-buy-sell-online-thanks-new-law-hardly-noticed.html\">September 2016<\/a>, HMRC has had access to sites like Paypal and can request extensive information from online auction\/selling platforms. This was following a recorded 870,000 sellers in the UK failing to do a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/self-assessment\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self Assessment<\/a> in 2016.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you\u2019re making profits and not declaring it, the chances are that HMRC will find out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to pay tax?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Paying your taxes is pretty simple, even though it may seem complicated if you\u2019re doing it yourself for the first time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Record all of your Depop sales in the tax year on a spreadsheet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deduct any business expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Register for Self Assessment online by 5th October &#8211; this declares your earnings to HMRC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay your tax return by 31st January&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can I expense if I\u2019m selling on Depop?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Listing fees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Postage and courier services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marketing costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photography equipment (e.g. camera, tripod etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Office space hire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modelling costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mileage and travel expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Craft materials&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This list isn&#8217;t exhaustive though, so just make sure that you keep a record of everything you spend because you may be able to deduct it from your tax bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check out this calculator<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, we know eBay and Depop are not the same thing, but when it comes to tax, the earnings are viewed in the same way by HMRC.
