On the one hand, the freedom allows you to be more in control of your working schedule and you can work anywhere around the world. Your rate of pay is also often higher so the income that you earn can be better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the challenges are also important to bear in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019re in charge of making sure that you have enough clients to fuel your income<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hours that you work can be a lot longer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have to pay for your equipment and tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do your marketing and promotion&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I pay tax?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re a freelancer, you have to pay tax yourself instead of your employer looking after it for you from your salary payments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two types of tax that you have to pay:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/income-tax-rates-in-the-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Income Tax<\/a> &#8211; which is based on how much you earn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/national-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Insurance<\/a> &#8211; which entitles you to state benefits such as the disability allowance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to pay both of these by 31st January via a tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to pay a tax return, you have to let HMRC know that your income is untaxed. You do this by filling in your income information through what\u2019s known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/self-assessment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self Assessment<\/a>. This has to be done by 5th October.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do expenses work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are a self-employed personal trainer, you can reduce the tax you pay by deducting your business expenses from your income when you come to do your tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <h3>Here are some examples of personal trainer expenses:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Work phone (or the portion of your phone bill that accounts for business expenses)<\/li>\n<li>Fitness studio rent<\/li>\n<li>Protein supplements that you sell to clients<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/mileage-allowance\/\">Mileage<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Marketing costs<\/li>\n<li>Equipment\n<ul>\n<li>Boxing gloves<\/li>\n<li>Skipping ropes<\/li>\n<li>Weights<\/li>\n<li>Etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>Check out HMRC for more information on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/expenses-if-youre-self-employed\">what you can expense<\/a> and how.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a freelance personal trainer, where you work is up to you.
