Like many self-employed roles, a self-employed teacher can experience vastly different incomes from month to month. Especially for those that teach children and work to an academic timetable. In some cases, if a teacher is employed on a regular business (e.g. a music school), they may pay taxes via <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/what-is-paye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pay As You Earn (PAYE)<\/a> which is done by an employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tax in 10(ish) seconds - what is your employment status?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i0hMhE-T9Xs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the most part though, this isn\u2019t the case. As a self-employed teacher, there are a few things to consider when it comes to tax:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you have to do a tax return?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How much should you pay?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What can you expense?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you have to do a tax return?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you go self-employed, you have to declare your earnings to HMRC so that they can calculate how much tax you owe them each tax year. To declare this, you have to do what\u2019s known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/i-need-self-assessment-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self Assessment<\/a>. Make sure that you register for Self Assessment online by 5th October to pay your tax bill for the tax year that has just ended. For example:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019re a self-employed teacher in the 2024\/25 tax year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must register for Self Assessment online by 5th October 2025<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The deadline to pay the 2024\/25 tax bill is 31st January 2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You will only have to do a tax return if you earn over a certain amount in each tax year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much tax does a self-employed teacher pay?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A self-employed teacher pays a tax bill made up of Income Tax and National Insurance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rate of income tax that you have to pay in the 2024\/25 tax year is based on the following table:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Income<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Tax rate<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Up to \u00a312,570<\/td><td>0%<\/td><td>Personal allowance<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\u00a312,571 to \u00a350,270<\/td><td>20%<\/td><td>Basic rate<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\u00a350,271 to \u00a3125,140<\/td><td>40%<\/td><td>Higher rate<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Over \u00a3125,141<\/td><td>45%<\/td><td>Additional rate<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/TaxScouts_IncomeTax-scaled.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"2560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/TaxScouts_IncomeTax-117x300.jpg 117w, https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/TaxScouts_IncomeTax-400x1024.jpg 400w, https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/TaxScouts_IncomeTax-768x1967.jpg 768w, https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/TaxScouts_IncomeTax-600x1536.jpg 600w, https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/TaxScouts_IncomeTax-800x2048.jpg 800w, https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/TaxScouts_IncomeTax-scaled.jpg 1000w\" class=\"wp-block-image__media\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 1000px) 768px, calc(100vw - 48px)\" alt=\"Income tax rates UK\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p>You only have to pay Income Tax and National Insurance when you earn more than \u00a312,570 in a tax year.\u00a0National Insurance is important to stay on top of because it qualifies you for various state-provided benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-employed teachers pay both:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/class-4-national-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Class 4 National Insurance<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As a self-employed teacher, you\u2019re not immediately eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/jobseekers-allowance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Job Seeker\u2019s Allowance<\/a> \u2013 so you may also choose to pay Class 1 National Insurance to qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\ud83d\udea8<\/span><b>From 6 April 2024 <\/b>(the 24\/25 tax year onwards),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/changes-to-national-insurance-contributions-from-6-january-2024\/a-reduction-in-the-main-rates-of-primary-class-1-and-class-4-national-insurance-contributions-and-the-removal-of-the-requirement-to-pay-class-2-nation\"><span class=\"s2\">Class 2 National Insurance is being scrapped<\/span><\/a>. If you\u2019re under the threshold and pay them voluntarily to qualify for benefits, you\u2019ll still be able to do so.<\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What expenses can a self-employed teacher claim?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In case you\u2019re not already aware, self-employed teaches can deduct expenses from their earnings. Anything that you spend on your business can be deducted from your gross earnings each year to lower your tax bill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here are some examples of self-employed teacher tax deductions:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Office electronics (your laptop, computer, printer, phone etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tutoring materials (music books, study materials)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Office or studio space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Business travel (train tickets, bus fare etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marketing materials (such as your website)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can technically expense anything that you\u2019ve spent on your business so make sure that you\u2019re as organised as possible.
