As long as you\u2019re prepared, organised and know what information you\u2019ll need to provide, Self Assessment tax forms are easy to fill out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do you know if you need to complete a Self Assessment form, and what information will you need to fill in? You will then use this to pay your tax return. Be warned, if you fail to submit a tax return by HMRC\u2019s deadlines, you\u2019ll face an automatic \u00a3100 penalty, plus any additional penalties and interest on the tax you owe.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-neutral m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of <strong>May 7th 2025<\/strong>, the Bank of England\u2019s interest rate is \ud83d\udc49 <\/span><b>4.25%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I fill in a Self Assessment form?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve never filled in a Self Assessment form before, it can look very scary and confusing. However, once you understand how the process works and have all the correct information you need, it\u2019s relatively simple!<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-blue m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <h2>Here\u2019s the information you need to have ready:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/utr-number\/\">Your Unique Taxpayer Reference<\/a> (UTR)<\/li>\n<li>Your National Insurance number<\/li>\n<li>Details of your untaxed income from the tax year<\/li>\n<li>Records of your expenses<\/li>\n<li>Contributions to charity or pensions that might be eligible for tax relief<\/li>\n<li>Your P60 or other records showing how much income you received which you\u2019ve already paid tax on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to fill in the main tax return section (SA100)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two sections to complete on a Self Assessment form. The main section is called the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/what-is-the-sa100-form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SA100<\/a>, which deals with the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Income:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Both taxed and untaxed income from interest earned from bank and building society accounts and dividends from shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pensions, annuities and state benefits:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Including state pension contributions and any state benefits received, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/jobseekers-allowance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other UK Income:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Any other form taxable income, not related to interest, dividends or on the supplementary pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other pension contributions:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Any payments you made into a registered pension scheme, annuity contract, or employer\u2019s scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Charitable donations:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here you enter the total of all Gift Aid donations you made to charities during the tax year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blind Person\u2019s Allowance:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Confirm whether or not you are claiming Blind Person\u2019s Allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student loan repayments:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Confirm whether or not you\u2019re currently repaying your Student Loan and deductions made by an employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High income Child Benefit charge:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need to fill in this part of the form if you\u2019re receiving Child Benefit and your income is more than \u00a360,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marriage Allowance:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You only need to complete this section if your income for the tax year was less than the Personal Allowance and you wish to transfer some of it to your wife\/husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to fill in the supplementary pages?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The supplementary pages are some of the most important parts of the Self Assessment form, especially if you\u2019re declaring extra income from self-employed work, property or capital gains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-nude m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <p>Depending on what you\u2019re declaring, you\u2019ll need to fill in the following supplementary pages on the form. In these pages you\u2019ll need to report on any untaxed income you\u2019ve earned from these sources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u2019re self-employed you\u2019ll need to complete <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/what-is-the-sa103-form\/\">SA103<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re reporting property income, then fill in <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/what-is-the-sa105-form-and-how-to-fill-it\/\">SA105<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re declaring capital gains, complete <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/sa108-form\/\">SA108<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also be able to declare any allowable <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/expenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expenses<\/a> in these sections, which will then be deducted from your tax bill by HMRC.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should I use an accountant to help me with my Self Assessment form?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer to this question depends entirely on your situation. Although it is possible to do your tax return yourself, the tax industry is notoriously complicated and the fines for making mistakes can be pretty hefty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a general rule, the more simple your tax return, the easier it is to do it correctly on your own.
