Because when you make a Payment on Account <a href=\"\/en-uk\/what-is-a-payment-on-account\/\">HMRC estimates this year&#8217;s income based on what you earned last year<\/a>, sometimes you might end up overpaying<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;re a construction worker and have registered for CIS (<a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/cis-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Construction Industry Scheme<\/a>): your contractor will deduct 20% tax from what you earn. <a href=\"\/en-uk\/cis-rebate\/\">Most of the time you&#8217;re due a \u00a31,000-2,000 rebate<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other less common situations:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can sometimes pay too much tax on savings interest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re a pensioner with more than one pension<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your state benefits change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You stopped working<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I check if I&#8217;m due a tax rebate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Full-time employed: check your tax code (<a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/what-is-paye\/\">here is how to read it and what those numbers and letters mean<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-employed: <a href=\"\/en-uk\/most-important-hmrc-contact-numbers\/\">try calling HMRC.<\/a> If you&#8217;re a CIS worker, you can also use our <a href=\"\/en-uk\/cis-rebate\/\">CIS tax rebate calculator<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I claim it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Claiming a tax refund depends on your situation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you&#8217;re a PAYE or pensioner: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/contact-hmrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">try contacting HMRC first<\/a> &#8211; they can change your tax code (be sure to have your National Insurance Number to hand when calling HMRC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;re self-employed: you&#8217;ll have to <a href=\"\/en-uk\/\">submit a Self Assessment tax return<\/a> to get your rebate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bare in mind that a tax rebate is different from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/tax-relief-for-employees\">tax relief<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tax in 10(ish) seconds - what is Self Assessment?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pMg5p0tJ-z8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>I know I\u2019m due a rebate, but where is it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ah, the age-old question. It all depends on HMRC. Once your Self Assessment is filed, your accountant doesn\u2019t control when you receive your rebate. Usually, you\u2019ll have it within 12 weeks but again, it all depends on HMRC. If you haven\u2019t received your refund within this timeframe, it\u2019s best to get in touch with HMRC for an update.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Watching out for scams<\/strong>&nbsp;\ud83d\udea8<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2025, HMRC issued a warning about a sharp rise in fake tax rebate messages. Scammers have been posing as HMRC, texting or emailing people to say they\u2019re \u201cdue a rebate\u201d, all to steal personal info.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 130,000 scam messages were reported in just one year \ud83e\udd2f, so it\u2019s worth double-checking before clicking on anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Here\u2019s how to stay safe:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t click on links in unexpected texts or emails<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HMRC will\u00a0<em>never<\/em>\u00a0ask for your bank details via text or email \ud83d\udd12<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only check your rebate through your Personal Tax Account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re unsure, call HMRC directly on\u00a0<strong>0300 200 3300<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Think you\u2019ve been targeted?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Report it to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionfraud.police.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Action Fraud<\/a>&nbsp;and contact your bank straight away. You can also forward suspicious emails to HMRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Anything else I should know?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t forget, there\u2019s also a possibility that you\u2019ve paid less tax than you need to. Not to worry, most of the time it won\u2019t be your fault but if there are changes you need to report, make sure you do your best to let HMRC know as soon as you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve over or underpaid your taxes, HMRC will send you a P800 or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/simple-assessment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simple Assessment tax calculation&nbsp;<\/a>at the end of the tax year.<em>&nbsp;<\/em>You won\u2019t receive either of these if you\u2019re registered for\/have already filed your Self Assessment.
