Back in March 2020, Chancellor Rishi Sunak promised to scrap the increasingly controversial tampon tax in the UK. He said that it would come to an end by the end of the year. Then in 2021, we became tampon-surcharge-free and no longer considered menstrual sanitary products as \u201cluxury items\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What was the tampon tax?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The tampon tax was introduced in 1973. It goes without saying that those responsible did not menstruate. The tax added VAT to menstrual sanitary products, classing them as luxury items. Before gasping in horror, it\u2019s important to understand how the VAT (Value Added Tax) system works in the UK. You won\u2019t have noticed it when you shop because, in the UK, it\u2019s inclusive in the cost of an item. In other countries around the world, it\u2019s added at the till when you pay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some items are charged at a reduced VAT rate of 5%. Examples of these are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Quit smoking products\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caravans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobility aids for the elderly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy-saving items like solar panels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Art and antiques importation (some but not all)\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children\u2019s car seats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, some services are more luxurious than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/rates-of-vat-on-different-goods-and-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">others<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tampon tax began life at an eye-watering 17.5% (which was the standard rate of VAT at the time). But it was later reduced to 5% in 2001, after significant campaigning efforts by MP Dawn Primarolo. Since then, it\u2019s stayed at 5% despite numerous campaigns to have the tax abolished completely. Notably was student (at the time) Laura Coryton\u2019s <em>Stop Taxing Periods<\/em> campaign in 2014.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Real talk: what are we saving?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, the abolition of tampon tax is not saving people who menstruate a whole lot of cash. In fact, it\u2019s been estimated to save you just \u00a340 over your lifetime. You\u2019ll save 7p on a pack of 20 and 5p on a pack of 12 sanitary towels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this is not the point. It\u2019s a triumph of principle &#8211; and for those who can\u2019t afford menstrual products, the abolition goes some way towards tackling period poverty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div> <!-- .c-body -->\n\n<div class=\"b-highlight-mini m-purple m-align-left\">\n    <div class=\"b-block-body\">\n        <h2>Period poverty<\/h2>\n<p>Period poverty is the term used when someone can\u2019t access menstrual products as a result of financial difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, 1 in 10 girls (of 1,000 14-21 year olds surveyed) can\u2019t afford menstrual products. 1 in 7 struggle to afford them. As a result, many young people are missing school and incurring regular gaps in their education.<\/p>\n<p>As many as 40% of girls said that they\u2019d used toilet roll because they couldn\u2019t afford menstrual products, and 68% felt that the lack of products affected their concentration at school.<\/p>\n<p>The government will continue to roll out their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/tampon-tax-abolished-from-today\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020 scheme<\/a> of providing free menstrual products in state schools and colleges, and NHS hospitals will continue to provide free products to any patients who need them.<\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div> <!-- .b-highlight-mini -->\n\n<div class=\"c-body\">\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wait, does that make us pioneers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the UK? No. Far from it. The UK are actually quite late to the party. Here are 18 countries around the world that have abolished the tax:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>10 states in the USA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Australia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canada<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colombia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UK (finally)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ireland<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jamaica<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kenya<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lebanon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Malaysia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nicaragua<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nigeria<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rwanda<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scotland &#8211; first country to make sanitary products free for all<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South Africa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tanzania<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uganda<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>So, we&#8217;re late to the party.
