There are indeed multiple ways that you can pay your tax bill. Time was that we were talking paper returns and a cheque payment &#8211; but today, thankfully, things are different. There\u2019s actually a bunch of methods that you can use. So here\u2019s a list of how and when to pay as a sole trader:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wait, what\u2019s a sole trader?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A sole trader is just another way of saying that you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/self-employed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-employed<\/a>. When you run a company of one (yourself) and you don\u2019t have any employees or pay VAT, HMRC views you as a sole trader.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tax in 10(ish) seconds - what does it mean to be self-employed?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-3ownjwzY8g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When you do have employees or you pay VAT, you\u2019re what\u2019s known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/limited-company\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">limited company<\/a>. For this, you have to register with <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfix.com\/en-uk\/glossary\/companies-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Companies House<\/a>. There are benefits to both &#8211; but choosing between the two depends on your personal preference and business needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is there a deadline?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a deadline to pay your tax bill. In fact, there are multiple deadlines. But it all depends on how you choose to pay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Via HMRC online<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deadline \u27a1\ufe0f 31st January<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Paying your tax bill online is probably the quickest and easiest way to pay your tax bill. To use this method, you have to register for Self Assessment online by <strong>5th October<\/strong>. If you can avoid paying this way, you might consider a more immediate method, especially given the pandemic. But it is, after all, your choice. When you send your payment, address it to: HMRC, Direct, BX5 5BD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Important to note\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019ll need to include a paying in slip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write your UTR number on the back of the cheque, followed by the letter \u2018K\u2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cheque payable to <em>HM Revenue and Customs only<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Direct Debit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deadline \u27a1\ufe0f&nbsp; 31st January, but allow 5 working days for the setup and payment process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can set up a Direct Debit with HMRC to pay your tax bill but be aware that you\u2019ll have to set a new one up each time that you need to pay. This includes your second Payment on Account payment in July.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Important to note\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your payment reference will be your UTR number plus the letter \u2018K\u2019 at the end<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PAYE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deadline \u27a1\ufe0f&nbsp; 30th December (online)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deadline \u27a1\ufe0f&nbsp; 31st October (paper)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re employed and you usually pay tax directly from your salary, HMRC lets you pay your undeclared tax via your tax code. You can use this method if your bill is less than \u00a33,000. The tax payments will be removed in instalments from your salary, which a lot of people prefer to paying a lump sum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Important to note\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The deadline to file is earlier &#8211; if you miss it, you\u2019ll have to pay in one<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The bill is taken in equal instalments over 12 months&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s taken from your salary or pension<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faster payment by bank transfer or phone, or CHAPS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deadline \u27a1\ufe0f&nbsp; 31st January<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can pay via a bank transfer or the payment transfer method, CHAPS. Both of these should clear in the same working day. They\u2019re popular methods for people paying from overseas. The bank account details to pay to should be on your tax bill.
