Still have questions?

Here are some common questions we've gotten from first-time filers like you.

You lose £1 of your Personal Allowance (the tax-free £12,570 you get) for every £2 over £100k you earn. This effectively means you are paying a 60% tax rate, but don’t panic! You can avoid losing your earnings by being more tax-efficient.

Tax efficiency is when you lawfully pay the least in tax that you need to. Some ways to be tax-efficient include saving more in your pension, asking for non-cash bonuses or investing in start-ups.

No, if you’re PAYE, you never need to file a tax return, no matter how much you're earning. However, if you are earning over £100k, it can be in your best interests to file a tax return, so you don’t lose extra money to the £100k tax trap.

There are two main ways to save money into your pension:

  1. Net pay or salary sacrifice: your employer will deduct the pension contribution before calculating tax on your pay.
  2. Relief at source: this means your contributions are taken from your net pay (after your wages are taxed). Then your pension provider automatically claims tax relief for you from HMRC, adding the basic tax rate of 20% to your pension contributions. If you're a higher rate taxpayer, you can submit a tax return and claim the rest (another 20-25%). This is how most private pensions and SIPPs work.

You can only claim the pension tax relief if your pension contributions are not made using "net pay" or "salary sacrifice" - check with your employer.

Yes. That's because:

  • You get NI credits, which count towards your state pension
  • Your child will also receive a NiNo right before they turn 16
  • Your Child Benefit payments are "protected" in case your income ever drops under £50,000

What you can do:

  • Either carry on getting Child Benefit and then paying it back
  • Stop getting Child Benefit entirely
  • Still claim Child Benefit, but choose not to get the actual payments

With the third option, you get all the benefits but without filling a tax return or paying something back.
