Still have questions?

Here are some common questions we've gotten from first-time filers like you.

If you’re earning any untaxed income within the tax year (6 April to 5 April), you need to report it to HMRC, regardless of the amount. If you earn more than your Personal Allowance of £12,570, you’ll need to start paying tax on your income.

The amount you pay depends on how much you make.

You’ll most likely only need to pay Income Tax and National Insurance, unless you have capital gains or anything else to report.

Yes, you can!

You can claim things like office rent, office decorations, work laptop/phone, protective gear for construction work, uniforms, fuel, and lots more!

If you’re self-employed and/or a landlord and your total income from these sources is over £50,000, you’ll need to follow MTD for Income Tax from April 2026.

If you earn between £30,000 and £50,000, your start date is April 2027.

Those earning less than £30,000 will be included later.

No matter what service you choose, we’re always here for you. Our support team is available to answer any questions from Monday to Friday via our live chat so get in touch if you ever need our help! You also have access to hundreds of jargon-free guides, blogs, calculators and videos in our resources section if you’re more of a read about tax in your own time kind of person. However you need us, we’ve got your back.

Most people in the UK don’t need to file a Self Assessment because they’re taxed through a system called PAYE (Pay As You Earn) and only receive their income after tax.

But, in other situations and for a variety of reasons, you might need to file Self Assessmenttax return.

Some instances include if:

  • You’re self-employed and earned over £1,000 of untaxed income
  • You need to pay Capital Gains Tax
  • You have any untaxed income over £1,000
  • HMRC tells you to submit one
  • You qualify for benefits
