What Taxfix does for you: we calculate, optimise, and file your tax return

This is not software that walks you through a form and leaves you to figure out the rest. When you use Taxfix for Self Assessment , a real UK accountant takes ownership of your return from start to finish.

Here's exactly what that means:

  • We calculate your tax bill – your accountant works out what you owe (or what HMRC owes you ), so you're never guessing
  • We find every allowance you're entitled to – eligible expenses , reliefs, and deductions that many filers miss when going it alone
  • We review your return for errors – a qualified accountant checks everything before a single figure goes to HMRC
  • We file directly with HMRC – using the official HMRC gateway, the same route used by all regulated UK accountants
  • We support you afterwards – questions about your return, HMRC letters, or year-round tax planning, depending on your plan

The result: a return you can trust, filed without the stress.

From sign-up to filing in 8 simple steps

Tell us about your tax situation

Answer a short questionnaire in plain English. No documents needed at this stage. Your answers help us match you with the right accountant and build your personalised document checklist. Most people are done in around 10 minutes.

Choose your level of support

All Taxfix plans include the same core service: a UK-accredited accountant prepares and files your Self Assessment tax return . Where the plans differ is in the level of ongoing support you receive.

  • Prepared & Filed Accurately covers the filing itself, plus messaging with your accountant during the process.
  • Filed, Optimised & Protected adds deduction and relief optimisation, a tax-planning call, and full HMRC protection (audit and letter support).
  • Filed + a Year-Round Tax Partner goes further: HMRC agent representation, year-round accountant access, and an annual tax efficiency review.

Not sure which plan is right for you?

The questionnaire helps guide you, or you can get in touch with our UK-based support team either at [email protected] or via the live chat on our homepage before you decide.

Get matched with your UK accountant

You're matched with a real UK-accredited accountant – ACCA, ICAEW, or AAT qualified, with at least five years' experience. Not an AI. Not an offshore team. They'll introduce themselves, review your answers, and send you a personalised document checklist. You can message them directly at any point.

We aim to match you with the same accountant every year, so they get to know your situation over time.

Upload your documents

Your accountant sends a personalised checklist based on your situation. A PAYE high earner might just need a P60 . A sole trader will need invoices and bank statements. A landlord will need rental income records and receipts.

Everything is uploaded securely through the platform. Your accountant can also pull P60 data directly from HMRC with your permission.£

Your accountant prepares your return

Your accountant completes your HMRC forms, identifies every eligible expense and relief , calculates your tax bill or refund, and checks everything for errors . This typically takes around two business days once they have all your documents.

Review and approve

You receive a plain-English summary of your return before anything goes to HMRC. Check the figures, ask questions, request changes. Nothing is submitted until you approve it.

We file with HMRC

Your accountant submits your return via the official HMRC gateway . You'll get a confirmation email with your submission receipt. HMRC typically takes 6–12 weeks to process returns and issue any rebate .

Ongoing support

Filing isn't the end. On Prepared & Filed Accurately, your accountant stays available to answer questions about your return until it's filed, and will resume contact for your next filing. With Filed, Optimised & Protected, they'll also review any HMRC letters you receive and provide investigation coverage if HMRC opens an enquiry. On Filed + a Year-Round Tax Partner, Taxfix is registered as your HMRC agent, so HMRC contacts us directly rather than you, and you have year-round access to your accountant plus the option to book tax planning calls throughout the year.

What's included in your service

All of our tax return services are filed by a UK-accredited accountant and covered by our Accuracy Guarantee. Here's exactly what you get with each plan

A note on complexity

Some tax situations involve additional work that falls outside the standard service scope. Examples include multi-year pension annual allowance tapering calculations, large-scale bookkeeping work, or complex capital gains portfolios. Your accountant will flag this transparently before any additional fees apply.

How long does it take to file your Self Assessment with Taxfix?

There's no single answer. Timing depends on how quickly you complete the questionnaire, how soon you upload your documents, and how complex your tax situation is. That said, here's a realistic picture of the journey:

  • Questionnaire: 10–15 minutes for most people
  • Document upload: varies – you go at your own pace
  • Accountant preparation: around two business days from when your accountant confirms they have everything
  • Your review: as quick or as considered as you like – there's no rush to approve
  • HMRC processing: 6–12 weeks after filing (this is HMRC's own timeline, outside our control)

If you've never filed before...

...you'll need a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) before Taxfix can file on your behalf. HMRC issues UTRs by post, and this can take 2–3 weeks. We strongly recommend registering with HMRC as early as possible, ideally well before the 5 October deadline for new filers.

What documents does Taxfix need to prepare and file your tax return?

The documents you need to provide depend on your income sources and personal tax situation. Your accountant will send you a personalised checklist after reviewing your questionnaire – but here are some common examples:

If you have an HMRC online account, your accountant can retrieve your P60 data directly from HMRC with your permission, saving you one step.

HMRC's free online filing is a reasonable option if your tax affairs are straightforward and you're confident doing it yourself. A traditional high-street accountant can provide a similar service to Taxfix, but typically at a higher price point and with slower turnaround times. Taxfix gives you the expertise and accountability of a real, accredited accountant, at a transparent price, delivered entirely online. No DIY guesswork, no inflated fees.

Still have questions?

Here are some common questions we've gotten from first-time filers like you.

Get started

Yes, completely. A real UK-accredited accountant prepares your return, optimises it for your situation, and submits it directly to HMRC via the official gateway. You review and approve before anything is filed, but the work is done for you.

Yes. TaxScouts was rebranded as Taxfix in the UK. The service, the accountant network, and the Accuracy Guarantee are all the same, just under a new name reflecting the broader Taxfix platform across Europe.

The timeline depends on how quickly you can upload your documents – once your accountant has everything they need, they'll get to work straight away. HMRC then takes 6–12 weeks to process the return and issue any refund.

It depends on your tax situation. Your accountant will send you a personalised checklist after reviewing your questionnaire. Common documents include your P60, invoices, bank statements, and expense records.

Every Taxfix return comes with our Accuracy Guarantee. If your accountant makes a filing error, we will correct it at no additional cost to you. We're also fully regulated, meaning our accountants are accountable to their professional bodies (ACCA, ICAEW, or AAT).

Yes. Many of our customers are first-time filers. The one thing to be aware of is that you'll need a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) before we can file on your behalf. If you don't have one, you'll need to register with HMRC first. We can guide you through this. UTRs arrive by post and can take 2–3 weeks, so we recommend registering early.

All plans include the same core service: a UK-accredited accountant prepares and files your Self Assessment return with the Accuracy Guarantee included. The plans differ in the level of ongoing support – Prepared & Filed Accurately covers your filed return, Filed, Optimised & Protected adds HMRC letter handling and investigation coverage, and Filed + a Year-Round Tax Partner gives you full HMRC agent status, year-round accountant access, and tax planning calls.

Yes. All documents are uploaded and stored on our secure platform. We are fully GDPR compliant, and your data is never shared with third parties without your consent. Your accountant accesses your documents only for the purpose of preparing your return.

Yes. Our Making Tax Digital software is fully compatible with HMRC's Making Tax Digital for Income Tax requirements. If you're a self-employed person or landlord preparing for the Making Tax Digital mandate, Taxfix gives you the software to stay compliant and an accountant to help you manage the transition.

Yes. As well as Self Assessment for individuals, Taxfix offers a company tax return service for limited company directors. A UK-accredited accountant prepares and files your CT600 with HMRC.

Absolutely. If you have a specific tax question – about a property sale, income from abroad, pension contributions, or anything else – you can book a standalone 30-minute consultation with a UK-accredited accountant for £139, with no commitment to file through Taxfix.
